When It Bangs Tells You a Lot 

Most guides list causes by sound type. We’ve found timing is often more useful for a first diagnosis, since several causes produce a similar sound but happen at different points in the heating cycle.

1. Kettling (Limescale or Sludge on the Heat Exchanger) 

Kettling is the most common cause of boiler banging noise in the UK, and it’s especially common across London given how much of the city sits in a hard water area. Limescale builds inside the heat exchanger over years of use, insulating parts of it unevenly. Water trapped against that limescale flash-boils into steam pockets, and the bang is that steam collapsing. 

What it sounds like: A rumbling or banging noise, often building up gradually and getting louder over weeks or months, usually right after the boiler fires. 

What to do: This isn’t a DIY fix. An engineer will assess the heat exchanger and recommend a chemical flush or a full power flush depending on severity. 2. Sludge (Magnetite) Restricting Flow 

Similar cause, different location. Over time, corrosion inside radiators and pipework creates a black sludge called magnetite, which settles at the bottom of radiators and inside boiler waterways. It restricts circulation, forcing the pump to work harder, and creating uneven heating that can trigger banging as pressure fluctuates unpredictably. 

What to check: Feel your radiators. Cold at the bottom, warm at the top is the classic sign of sludge, and it usually appears alongside the banging rather than instead of it. 

What to do: A power flush clears existing sludge, and adding a chemical inhibitor afterwards slows it back up. This is worth doing alongside a kettling fix if both are present, which is common in systems that haven’t been serviced in a while. 

3. Trapped Air in the System 

Air pockets interrupt water flow, and hot water forcing its way past a trapped air pocket creates a knocking or banging sound, particularly when the system is starting from cold. This is one of the few causes that’s genuinely safe to check yourself. 

What to do: Bleed any radiators with cold spots or that feel cooler at the top than the bottom. If bleeding fixes it, you’re done. If air keeps coming back within a few weeks, that’s usually a sign of something else, often a small leak or unstable pressure rather than air on its own. 4. Loose or Expanding Pipework 

Copper pipework naturally expands as hot water passes through it. If a section is clipped too tightly, resting directly against a joist, or running through a hole that’s too small, that expansion has nowhere to go, and the pipe suddenly shifts, producing a knocking sound as it moves. 

What to check: Follow the noise along visible pipe runs (under floorboards or in an airing cupboard) and look for pipes sitting flush against timber with no clearance. 

What to do: This is usually resolved with additional clips, foam lagging, or slightly repositioning the pipe run. In older London properties with original floorboards and joists, pipework often wasn’t installed with enough expansion clearance in the first place, so this fault tends to show up more often in period housing than in newer builds. 

5. A Failing Circulation Pump 

The pump moves heated water around your system continuously while the heating runs. A worn, partially blocked, or failing pump can produce a persistent knocking or vibrating noise, distinct from the intermittent bang of kettling, and it usually gets louder over time rather than appearing suddenly. 

What to do: This needs a proper inspection. A failing pump left unaddressed will eventually stop circulating water effectively, leading to poor heating performance across the whole house before it fails completely. 

6. Low or Unstable Pressure 

Low pressure disrupts water circulation, and disrupted circulation can cause banging as water moves unevenly through the system. Pressure-related faults are linked to a meaningful share of banging noise cases, and it’s often overlooked because people check the noise and the pressure gauge separately rather than together.

Is a Banging Boiler Dangerous? 

Usually not immediately, but it’s not something to ignore either. A boiler banging continuously, getting rapidly louder, or appearing alongside a burning smell, visible leak, or repeated shutdowns is a different situation, and that’s when you should turn the boiler off and treat it as urgent rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
